Coming up with content – a guide to idea generation

Blog imageIf you’ve set yourself a target of a certain number of posts per week, you should stick to it, but it can be difficult to come up with engaging ideas on a regular basis. Here at Write My Site, we try to stay on top of all things content, but even we get the occasional bout of blog writer’s block. We know it’s tough, and we want to help ease the burden, which is why we’ve put together this list of ways to spark your creativity and generate blog posts you can be proud of.

  • Google with gusto
If there’s breaking news in your industry, you should certainly be aware of it, and if it’s particularly relevant to your company, it is definitely advisable to blog about it. Use Google’s News and Alerts features to find keyword-relevant topics – you’ll be amazed how often a new story pops up. Time is of the essence with news pieces, which means you’ll have blog ideas that you can use instantly!
  • Stay social
Social media is always a great way to keep in touch with the recent happenings in your sector. Follow like-minded people in similar areas of business, and see what they are posting, tweeting and pinning about. It is never (we repeat, never) advisable to plagiarise content, but seeing what your competitors or associates are doing may help you to come up with fresh ideas of your own.
  • Make a mind map
We know, the last time you made a mind map was probably for your GCSE revision, but your teachers were right – they really are a useful tool, and they’re great for generating and linking ideas that you might like to blog about. Start with a focus word, and expand your ideas from there – for instance, if your business makes cupcakes, break the focus word down into associated topics like ingredients, recipes, baking equipment, decorations … we could go on, but you get the picture and it’s just making us hungry. Seeing your ideas on paper can make a real difference, so grab some marker pens and get to work.
  • Keep your eyes (and ears) open
Inspiration is all around you, and you might not even know it. Even sneakily eavesdropping on someone else’s conversation on the Tube might spark an idea that you never would have thought of otherwise. Carry a small notepad and a pen so that you can capture these bursts of genius and take them back to the office, ready to craft into your best blog yet.

These techniques have helped us more times that we can remember, so give them a try and see if they work for you. If you’ve got your own ways of coming up with content, leave us a comment and let us know.
