Why is it so tough to get back into ‘work mode’?

No matter how much you love your job, the first few days back is always tough. You have mountains of emails to get through (200 is our office record), your eyes aren’t used to your glaring screen and the office heating usually throws a wobbly because it hasn’t been used over Christmas.

Not the most conducive working environment, is it? However, those aren’t the main reasons why it’s difficult to be productive when you return to work.

You see, the brain is like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it for a few days, it will start to go soft and flabby.

Now, we’re sure that your Christmas trivia quizzes and highly competitive games of scrabble were pretty challenging, however that doesn’t mean you used your brain in the same way as you do at work. And, let’s face it, the indulgent food and never-ending bottles of fizz probably had an effect too!

Your first day back at work is like your first day back at the gym. Your body groans, you don’t want to be there and you’re nowhere near as productive as you were before Christmas.

Sadly, there’s no magic energy drink or protein bar that can get those creative juices flowing. You’ll need something else to whip you into shape and make you more productive. Luckily for you, we have a few tips. Check them out!

4 ways to get those creative juices flowing and become more productive

1. Plan your day

Write your core list of tasks for the day, then break them down into separate stages if you need to. This will get you thinking about ideas for each task, but not in such an in-depth way that your brain gets bogged-down. Writing a to-do list is a brilliant way to get back into work mode.

Another element you can introduce to this is rewarding yourself for completing each stage (or task). The reward could be sweets, treats, a quick look at cute cat pics on Tumblr or even just the satisfaction of ticking something off your list. Don’t laugh – it feels really good!

Yes, this is bribery at its finest, but it really works. Rewards motivate you to get moving and kick your brain into action.

2. Take a break

Like at the gym, sometimes you just need to take a breather and step away from the machines. Try doing this while you’re in the office. Walk around, have a chat, open a window, make a cuppa or even go outside if you can!

Studies show that the 10% most productive employees take 17-minute breaks for every 52 minutes of work they put in. It sounds counter-intuitive, but bear with us.

These productive people ‘hyper focus’ while they’re at their desk, but when they’re done, they’re done. They step away and concentrate on themselves instead of work. This also helps eliminate distractions while they’re at their desk (Facebook notifications, personal calls etc) so it’s a positive for both employees and employers!

3. Do something else for a bit

Some tasks are just really uninspiring. So, if you’re simply stuck (and deadlines allow) switch to something a little more exciting and come back to your original task later.

It may seem silly, but switching things up redirects your brain and will help you feel re-energised when you return – especially if you complete the new task to a high standard.

Also, leaving the boring task until later might give you the little push of pressure you need to get the work finished on time. Just don’t leave it too late!

4. Make sure you’re accountable

It’s easy to cave into laziness and apathy if you’re the only one who knows about your content marketing goals. However, if you tell someone what you want to achieve they can push you and help you reach your target. Think of this individual as your own personal cheerleader (without the pom-poms).

Tell a colleague that you’re going to complete your project by a certain time. They’ll hold you accountable if you don’t, so that will give you the motivation you need to become much more productive.
