Schoolgirl’s blogging efforts raise £100,000
9 year old Martha Payne hit the headlines recently for her ‘Neverseconds’ blog, which shared pictures and descriptions of the sub-standard school meals served to herself and her classmates on a daily basis. Despite being told by Argyll and Bute Council that she was no longer allowed to post images of the dinners, after catering staff became concerned by the media coverage, Martha has still managed to use her blog for good. Public contributions through her JustGiving page have enabled the schoolgirl to raise £100,000 for Mary’s Meals, a charity which runs school feeding projects in poor communities across the globe. Martha described the feat as “totally awesome.”
Social media users in China are ‘happier’ than Westerners
Researchers from the Delft University of Technology in Holland have found that 79% of messages posted on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter are positive, compared with just 71% of tweets in Western countries. The computer scientists compared 46 million messages posted on Twitter and the similar platform ‘Sina Weibo’, which is popular in China, to obtain the results. They also found that when discussing locations or people, Sina Weibo users tended to become even more positive – whereas Twitter users became increasingly negative.
Google releases 10 minute guide to SEO
Maile Ohye, a developer advocate on Google’s Webmaster Central team, has starred in a 10 minute video featuring lots of helpful SEO advice for start-ups. Her tips include avoiding meta keyword tags, signing up for email forwarding, and using Google’s Webmaster tools to search for keywords related to your domain name, to see if the previous owners have damaged its search ranking.
