The top spot on Google’s organic search results gets 33% of clicks
New research from online advertising network Chikita has shown that the site at the top spot on Google’s organic search results pages gets an impressive 33% of user clicks. Interestingly, despite Google’s numerous algorithm updates and alterations, the results were similar to an equivalent survey conducted by Chikita in 2010 – suggesting that the rights sites are managing to maintain their position at the top of the SERPs.
Facebook launches hashtags
In a somewhat unsurprising move for most social media fans, Facebook has finally launched its own hashtag function. Working in a similar way to Twitter’s original hashtag, which launched in 2007, Facebook’s hashtag system allows users to find content on a particular subject at the click of a button – or as Facebook explains in an official statement, “a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about.”
The term ‘tweet’ enters the Oxford English Dictionary
Twitter has become such an integral part of everyday life that the term ‘tweet’ has earned itself a place in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), alongside its more traditional definition of birdsong. John Simpson, chief editor of the OED, explained that the entry of the word “breaks at least one OED rule, namely that a new word needs to be current for ten years before considerations for inclusion – but it seems to be catching on.” Incidentally, the word ‘retweet’ is already in the dictionary, and has been there since 2011.
