What business bloggers can learn from Buzzfeed

The shape of the British internet changed forever at the end of March, with the introduction of Buzzfeed UK, an anglicised version of everyone’s favourite
passing-the-time blog from the States. Buzzfeed is predominantly known for its photo collections, which feature everything from ‘people who shouldn’t be allowed to use the internet’ to ‘things you never want to see under a microscope’ – and yes, these lists are generally hilarious and/or fascinating in equal measures.

However, what many fair-weather followers of Buzzfeed may not realise is that its content curation goes way beyond funny memes. From in depth editorials about current affairs to assessments of the latest sports scores, Buzzfeed owes much of its success to the incredible variety of content that it offers. 

So how can your business benefit from the Buzzfeed strategy? Well, it may not be feasible for you to cover every topic under the sun and then some, but there are plenty of tips and tricks that any business can implement in order to replicate Buzzfeed’s success. In celebration of its arrival in the UK, here are 5 things your business blog can learn from Buzzfeed.

  1. Short and sweet is (usually) better
    Here’s the bottom line – people are busy, and if they’re reading news in an online forum, chances are they don’t have time to go through your 4000 word summary on the latest industry developments. Buzzfeed attracts thousands of readers from across the globe, and retains them, because most of their articles can be squeezed in between a morning train and a lunchtime meeting. When you’re writing your blog content, consider which paragraphs are really necessary, and which are just waffle – anything that falls into the latter category should be cut.
  2. Visual content is essential
    Another aspect of Buzzfeed’s appeal is that they use visual content extremely well. Not one of their stories is presented as a big block of text – they are broken up with images and subheadings and presented in a way that makes them appear accessible and easy to read. More often than not, their stories are more images accompanied by text than the other way around, and whilst this may not work for every blog post you write, it’s certainly not a bad idea to put together a post in this manner once in a while.
  3. It’s good to offer variety
    Okay, so it’s unlikely that your business blog is going to write about dogs in funny costumes or celebrity scandals from years gone by, but expanding your blogging horizons can give you scope for creative, engaging posts that you may never have thought of otherwise. For instance, a blog written by a bakery could step away from the cupcake recipes and expand their focus to incorporate other areas of food related news, such as ingredient sourcing, health concerns, and TV shows in the area.
  4. Lists make a great basis for articles
    Yes, we’ve used this one ourselves! List formats are fantastic for blogs as they instantly make your pieces more readable by breaking them up. Another great thing about list based articles is that you can adapt them to your needs – 5 points can easily become 10 if you find you have lots more to say, whilst 10 can quickly be whittled down to 7 if you’re short on time.
  5. Everyone likes a laugh
    Ultimately, the spirit of Buzzfeed is fun and frivolous – whilst it does cover some hard hitting topics alongside its more comical offerings, the site doesn’t take itself (or its readers) too seriously. Sometimes, the best business blogs are the ones that surprise you with an unexpected gag or hilarious picture. It’s not unprofessional – as long as they’re not wildly inappropriate, these kinds of posts simply add personality to corporate copy that’s often stale and stuffy. Raise a smile from your readers and they’re instantly more likely to come back again for more.
